Music is Coming back in July!

We’ve been doing it tough in Victoria and we were so sad for you the audience and of course the artists that our June shows couldn’t go ahead. But now we are super excited that things are looking good for the rescheduled dates.

We have released some additional tickets for both Kim Churchill (now on Friday 16 July) and Liz Stringer (now on Saturday 17 July), but they won’t last so don’t delay. We’re hoping to be back to 100% seated capacity by mid July, so if you have missed out add yourself to the waiting list and keep an eye on social media as we may be able to release even more!

As if it weren’t exciting enough that we’re bringing live music back to Anglesea Memorial Hall, we have some huge news. On Friday 30 and Saturday 31 July Julia Jacklin is heading to town to play two intimate solo nights! Limited tickets will go on sale this Friday morning with hopefully more to be released closer to the show when these sell out – which they absolutely will! Set the alarm for 8.55am and be ready at 9am when they become available.

If her debut album Don’t Let The Kids Win established Julia Jacklin as an artist to watch, her 2019 follow up Crushing solidified her as one of the songwriters of her generation. It frequented end of year lists, was nominated for six ARIA Awards, and both US and UK independent music awards, and led to sold out shows the world over.

Julia has released a 7” for the treasured Sub Pop label, an original Christmas song and a Björk cover with RVG in the 15 months since COVID began, but now she is back on tour in July and August for a series of rare solo performances. See her live in Anglesea where she’ll draw on songs from across her entire catalogue and give fans some never before heard songs.

Tickets $50. On sale Friday 2 July at 9am.

But you’d better be quick for Liz, as we have already announced these tickets to our waiting list and they might already be snapped up!

MEET MERPIRE …
Supporting Liz Stringer on Friday 4 June

Merpire, the moniker of Melbourne-based artist Rhiannon Atkinson-Howatt, writes music living somewhere between the rom-com and horror movie sections in her mind. Off the back of her independent, debut EP release in 2018 she showcased at Bigsound and sold out her Endless Chatter EP tour. By the end of 2019, Merpire had accrued an impressive list of supports including Julia Jacklin, Angie McMahon, Didirri and Gengahr (UK).
A Merpire live show flows between intimate pop ballads and fully immersive alt-indie heart-shakers. Have a listen here: https://youtu.be/iDO6VTwN8c0

Libby Steel is an alternative pop singer-songwriter based on the Surf Coast. Known for her strong soulful vocals, she has taken her explosive set across the country, supporting acts like San Cisco, Harts, Taylor Henderson and more. Her music has captured the attention of triple j where she has received stellar coverage and reviews from presenters praising her big and versatile voice in clever pop songs. She’s due to release her debut EP this year so this is one artist to say you saw back when!

Music to our ears

Our first shows since October 2019 happened over the weekend and they were incredible! Obviously things looked a bit different but the sound quality and the calibre of incredible artists was the same as it’s always been. It really was an amazing weekend – and we hope if you got to experience you loved it too.

We’re not ones to rest on our laurels. It’s time to look to June and to announce the next artists to be hitting the Anglesea Memorial Hall stage!

On Friday 4 June Liz Stringer kicks off her sixth album tour right here in Anglesea. We had hoped to see Liz as part of Dyson Stringer Cloher last year so we’re extra excited to have her coming again with an all new band line-up and her brand-new album.

Tickets went on sale this morning and we have a feeling this one will sell out very quickly so don’t delay in securing yours.

On Saturday 5 June talented multi-instrumentalist Kim Churchill swings by as he tours regional Australia to celebrate his 4-part EP collection I Am Forgetting The End Again. Hear songs from his recording travels in this beautiful night of stories and sonic adventures supported by Surf Coast rocket Libby Steel.

Tickets are on sale now so don’t miss out!

We’re in an ever changing events world!
At the moment our June shows are being sold as all seated gigs where you will only be able to sit with the group you book with, with an appropriate distance set up between you and the patrons around you. At this stage you will still need the name and contact number of everyone in your group to make your booking. Should things change we’ll update you – hey we may even be able to fit more ticket buyers in and we may even be able to dance!

We’re Back!

It’s been 491 days since we put on a show in Anglesea but we’ll be back on stage over three nights in March.

We can’t quite believe it’s happening (and let’s face it, in this current world of uncertainty we can’t be sure it actually will happen until we hit the stage on the night) but yes, we have a fantastic line-up planned. Direct links to tickets here. Read on for more about the lineup.

It’s probably easiest to describe C.W. Stoneking as a ‘blues artist,’ but the term disguises what makes his music special. There’s so much in there  – a 1920s pre-war blues sound with almost equal helpings of New Orleans jazz, jug band music, hokum, country and calypso, and he’s lately brought in elements of jump jive, early rock ’n’ roll and gospel.

He’ll be supported on the night by  local powerhouse Nathan Seeckts, a singer songwriter who effortlessly fuses the sounds of folk, country and blues delivering them with a commanding voice that is equal parts gravel and passion.

See C.W. Stoneking on Thursday 18 March. Tickets $55.

A Friday Night Double Header on Friday 19 March featuring Jess Locke + Bones and JonesTickets just $35!

Melbourne artist Jess Locke is known for penning indie pop tracks that are at times subtle and full of melancholy, at times delivered with an acerbic tongue, but always steeped heavily in narrative. Her raw and honest storytelling and poetic inclinations have seen her heralded as pushing her way to the front of the pack of talented Aussie artists.

Over several years, dynamic six-piece Bones and Jones have emerged as one of Melbourne’s most exciting and energetic bands. The silky blend of swaying drums, roaring lap steel and driven organ paint the picture of the immense live sound they are so well known for.

An Evening with Emma Donovan & The Putbacks rounds out the Sound Doctor’s first weekend back.
Sound Doctor fans who saw Mission Songs Project will remember the incredible voice of acclaimed Indigenous performer Emma Donovan. We’re bringing her back to Anglesea with her band for a night of pure soul.

Emma’s songwriting is optimistic, impassioned and bruisingly honest. The music of Melbourne rhythm combo The Putbacks is fluid, live and raw. Together they burst on to the Australian scene in 2014, and the collaboration has won friends and admirers all over the world.

Support on the night is from star on the rise Kee’ahn. With a name coming from the Wik people, meaning to dance, to sing, to play, Kee’ahn aims to honour her name and Ancestors through her soulful music that weaves lush melodies and words reminiscent of heartbreak and healing.

Tickets are $50.

Remember capacities for these shows are very limited so you will need to get in quick to secure your tickets. All gigs will be seated and you will only be able to sit with the group you book with, with an appropriate distance set up between you and the patrons around you.

An Evening with Didirri

We’ve had some wonderful vocalists and storytellers grace the Anglesea Memorial Hall stage this year (Archie Roach, Katie Noonan and our recent Alice Skye and Emily Wurramara line-up spring to mind) and to end off the year we’re bringing Didirri to town.

This Melbourne singer-songwriter has been mesmerising audiences since he first started performing. His challenging and thoughtful writing, combined with on-stage charisma and relatable depth has continually won over listeners around the world. Simultaneously heartbreaking and healing, and approaching real issues with smile and charm, Didirri is an artist with something to say.

If you have a triple j listener in the house, they’ll no doubt be familiar with his work – and will be excited about support artist Ruby Gill too – but if you’ve never had the pleasure of hearing Didirri sing listen to a track here. Then book your tickets to see him performing solo and live for The Sound Doctor.

Looking ahead to October

Don’t miss Olympia, one of Australia’s most relentlessly original artists performing her highly anticipated new album ‘Flamingo’ live.

With her sophomore album FLAMINGO released on July 5, Olympia has a string of high profile tour dates across the globe.

Following critically acclaimed shows across the UK and Europe earlier this year, Olympia returns for the biggest headline tour of her career including the UK, Ireland, Europe and Australia, to deliver the bold, immersive vision that is ‘Flamingo’, with a full band in tow.

‘Flamingo’ is Olympia’s most personal record to date, full of risk, escalation, and the complex pop unspooling we’ve come to recognise in her work. Packed with insistent earworms the album struts boldy between the artists knack at crafting sophisticated pop tunes able to spring multiple moods, and the sizzle of sonics being pushed ever so into the red.

Her music has been compared to artists as disparate as Joey Santiago (Pixies), Anna Calvi and David Bowie.

Olivia Bartley, creative force behind the project, co-produced the upcoming album with long-time collaborator Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett, DMAs).

Olympia will be supported in Anglesea by Jess Ribeiro.

An Evening with Alice Skye & Emily Wurramara

Alice Skye is a singer-songwriter and Wergaia woman whose songs sparkle with a sensitivity and maturity well beyond her years, accompanied by the gentle and hauntingly sparse melodies of a piano score. She is joined for this special show by proud Indigenous performer Emily Wurramara. Originally from Groote Eylandt, Emily wrote her first song aged nine and she continues to share her stories and experiences with heart and honesty through her original music sung in English and Anindilyakwa.

Cash Savage and The Last Drinks

Having towered over festival audiences at Golden Plains, Boogie and Sydney Festival, selling out Melbourne venues, and earning rave reviews for her recent packed-out Sydney show, Cash Savage and the Last Drinks are on a mighty roll.

This incandescent live band at the height of their powers are led by their mighty frontwoman. Her potent lyrics and impassioned delivery articulate the personal-political issues of these times with heart, guts and grit.

“Next to Courtney Barnett, she is one of the most original and distinctively Australian voices to emerge in the last few years.” Daily Review

Don’t miss them bringing their epic live show to Anglesea. Support is from the wild, unconventional and ruthlessly blunt songwriter Hollie Joyce. Combining fervent lyrics with distorted and at times eerie tones, Joyce has established a compelling sound that doesn’t hold back – it’s a dynamic cacophony that sometimes strays into raucous rock ’n’ roll freak outs, while at other times deviates to the more alluring and melodic.
