An Evening with Tiny Ruins

A rare blend of eloquent lyrical craft and explorative musicianship, the songs of New Zealand band Tiny Ruins have been treasured by crowds and critics for almost a decade. Traversing influences that cross genre and era, the artistry of Hollie Fullbrook and her band spans delicate folk, lustrous dream pop and ebullient psychedelia. And they’re bringing it all to Anglesea for the Sound Doctor as they tour the country with their latest album, Olympic Girls.

Support will be from Melbourne-based musician Ryan Downey, performing his signature blend of rock, pop and folk in a mesmeric baritone voice that is a jaw-dropping amalgamation of Leonard Cohen and a spirited Bill Callahan by way of a mid-century crooner.

Milk! Records Goes Coastal

Turn the clock back to March 2018, when Jen Cloher blew the roof off the Anglesea Memorial Hall. No-one could have imagined how that humble building could have been transformed into a bona fide rock venue. Well it happened, and we’re planning on doing it all again this March when we bring three bands from Milk! Records (the label founded by Jen and Courtney Barnett) to town for one rocking show. This is one for the music fans, the people who are in the know (or want to be able to say I saw them when…). It’s a standing (get up and groove) show and it’s going to be big.

First up we introduce you to Hachiku (though if you caught Fraser A Gorman in August you may recognise the lead singer!). Hachiku is the brainchild of German bedroom-producer Anika Ostendorf, who writes and produces her home-made dream pop (think: Grimes, Perfume Genius and early CocoRosie) from whichever bedroom she is currently inhabiting.

Swept together from the ashes of your finest night on the tiles, Loose Tooth are a Melbourne three-piece who craft sweet guitar pop with frayed edges and swollen hearts. Whether they’re spluttering to life on an empty tank or hitting harmonies in full flight, seeing this trio really is a beautiful thing.

Jade Imagine, Melbourne’s low-fi, slacker-fuzz-dream pop band bathed in the glow of ’70s surf-music, was destined for greatness from the beginning. Jade McInally, front babe and brains, has been a stalwart of the indie scene since 2004 and since releasing their EP on Milk! Records her band has been getting bigger and better!

An Evening With Archie Roach

Since emerging in the early ‘90s, Australian singer-songwriter Archie Roach has enjoyed a stellar career, sharing the stage with some of the world’s most iconic artists. Perhaps best-known for his heartbreaking song, ‘Took the Child Away’, a deeply affecting ballad about his own experience as one of the Stolen Generations of First Nations’ children, Roach has released 11 albums including his most recent Dancing With My Spirit.

His music speaks the stories of his people, of this land and of the human condition. His voice – uniquely Australian and undeniably universal – resonates for us all and we are humbled to be able to share this special evening with our Sound Doctor audience.

‘[Archie’s] soulful voice, filled with love, pain, joy and wonderment is stronger and richer than ever.’ The West Australian

Meet Our Special Guest Support Acts

We’ve told you all about our exciting headline artists already, so now it’s time to introduce the special guests who’ll be opening our November gigs.

Jason Lowe is a name familiar to many music lovers on the Surf Coast. But for those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of hearing him perform, we asked him to describe his sound.

‘My sound could be described as Alternative/New Age Folk, inspired in particular by the legendary singer songwriters of the 60s and 70s. I sing and perform my songs on lap slide guitar, acoustic guitar and piano.

What I love most about performing live is connecting with the audience, and the energy exchange that takes place. The heightened emotional levels that can be experienced are profound. I reach out to an audience with my soul not only through song but through storytelling and personal interaction.’

If you take a look at this clip you’ll understand just what Jason means.

If it’s heavenly harmonies you’re after then it’s Broads you want to hear. We asked Kelly and Jane to tell us how they got started together and what they love about performing intimate shows – like you’ll experience when they come to Anglesea.

‘We were singing together for about 10 years before we decided to start Broads. We were one half of an acappella band called The Nymphs, but also got around as guest singers and backing vocalists for a whole bunch of different bands in Melbourne. It was a long time coming, but we eventually knew we had to create our own project.

We love intimate shows because the best feeling as a performer is when you really connect with an engaged audience. We often play with a full band these days, but being able to go back to our original form, as an acoustic duo, and create something personal and raw is such a rush. It’s why we do what we do!’

Check out their dreamy sound here!

An Evening with Mama Kin Spender

Mama Kin Spender is a lightning bolt moment between two long-time friends, co-writers and mischief-makers – ARIA-nominated Mama Kin and producer Tommy Spender. It’s a stripped back duo of brooding guitars, primal drums and howling harmonies, illuminated for this show by four beautiful backing singers.  Their songs rattle, roll and tremble, from block party to heart rending ballad, with a sound that is as raw as it is joyful.

Since the release of their album Golden Magnetic in February, Mama Kin Spender have been flat chat, cramming in a national album launch run amidst shows at festivals around the country. Fresh off the back of their USA, Canadian and Irish tours, they will be rounding off 2018 with an Australian tour that includes this stop for The Sound Doctor.

As if this wasn’t enough to get music fans excited, we’re also announcing that Mama Kin Spender will be supported by Melbourne queens of indie-noir Broads. Drawing from an era of highly performative crooners, Broads deliver haunting, narcotic and deceptively sweet songs laced with tongue-in-cheek criticism of the culture from which they stem.

An Evening with All Our Exes Live in Texas

All Our Exes Live in Texas are a fantasy draft of Australia’s finest singer-songwriters combining in four-part indie-folk harmony heaven. On mandolin, ukulele, accordion and guitar, the Exes are a powerhouse of charm and songwriting prowess.

Known as much for their side-splitting banter and feminist politics as their devastatingly beautiful harmonies, All Our Exes Live in Texas have had an impressive career to date. Since forming for an O Brother Where Art Thou? tribute show in 2013, they’ve circumnavigated Australia more times than they can count, playing sold-out headline tours and almost every festival the country has to offer. And they topped off 2017 by winning an ARIA for Best Blues & Roots Album.

No strangers to the Surf Coast after their Lorne FOPA artist residency in 2016, we are excited to be bringing the gals back for their final headline show before they take a well-earned break from touring. Anyone who has seen the Exes before knows what an amazing night this will be – so get in quick to secure your seat!

Special guest for the evening will be Jason Lowe, known and loved by many along the Surf Coast. More details soon…
